Gum Health Basics

Your gum and jaw play a very important role in maintaining your healthy smile. If you focus on your teeth alone and neglect your gums, it can cause dental problems like gingivitis. To take care of your gums, you must be aware of certain dos and don’ts.

Tips to Take Care of Your Gums

Brush Twice a Day
Brushing your teeth twice a day can protect you from many dental issues. Even when you are busy, you should spare some time to brush your teeth. You must use a toothbrush with soft bristles. After eating, it’s better to clean your teeth and remove the food debris.

Floss Once a Day
Flossing your teeth daily helps in maintaining healthy gums. When you floss, it removes the debris from those parts where your toothbrushes can’t reach. This will help you to get rid of dental plaque.

Use a Good Mouthwash
Using a good quality mouthwash is also an important step in maintaining your oral hygiene. However, it can’t be used as a replacement for brushing or flossing. Instead, it can help you clean areas, such as the inside of your cheek, that can’t be cleaned by other methods.

Regularly Visit Your Dentist
Whether you have any dental issues or not, you should visit your dentist once or twice a year. If there’s any problem, your dentist will detect that and you can take treatment before it gets worse. It’s also recommended that you clean your teeth once in a while to remove plaque.

Eat Healthy Food
Avoid having sugary or starchy food and drinks. Instead, include food rich in Vitamin D, Calcium, and other minerals that make your gums strong. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet and stay hydrated to maintain good oral health.

Things You Should Avoid

  • Don’t use toothbrushes with hard bristles as they can damage your teeth and gums.
  • Never skip your oral health routine that includes brushing twice and flossing once a day.
  • Quit smoking, as it can stain your teeth and also cause tooth decay.
  • Avoid having too much sugary, starchy or acidic food. It will eventually affect your tooth enamel and cause cavities.
  • Don’t delay visiting your dentist in case of an emergency.
