A Common Oral Disease
Gum disease affects millions of people every year—around 64 million adults over 30 years old in America suffer from periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria get between the gums and teeth and is left untreated. If continually ignored, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and even affect your overall systemic health. While there is no cure for periodontal disease, there is effective treatment in the form of osseous surgery.
Osseous Surgery Combats the Effects of Gum Disease
If you suffer from periodontal disease, you won’t be able to clean away the infection yourself, as it lies underneath your gum line. With osseous surgery, Dr. John Thousand is able to give you an extra, extra deep clean below the gum line. We will gently retract your gums to gain access to areas where the bacteria live. The buildup of tartar and bacteria will be removed and infected gum tissue will be trimmed away. If the disease has affected your jaw bone, we will carefully smooth it out so the gums can reattach effectively. Finally, your gums will be put back in place using small sutures and healing will begin.
